Mike provided the following short discussion of what inspired his new book:
We (my wife, daughter, and I) have many cookbooks in our house. Many of those books were purchased in my pre-Gluten-Free days, and the one thing they nearly all have in common is a combination of great recipes and full-color photos of the foods produced. When I became gluten-free, we went looking for gluten-free cookbooks that were similar to the rest of our collection. Alas, we did not encounter any. And, without pictures of the end-product, it was a bit of hit-and-miss with finding good recipes during our early gluten-free baking experiences. That frustrated us a bit, me especially, and is a large part of what motivated us to put this book together.
So, the book was designed to bring that "coffee table" cookbook feel, along with great glutenfree recipes, to the Celiac and Gluten-Free community. Even if we do not sell many, I do think some "bigger names" in the business may take notice of how we are making a very forthright attempt to "raise the bar" for gluten-free cookbooks and products in general. I am quite thankful I had a supportive family (without whom this GF desserts book would not exist) that stuck it out from my early "vision" (perhaps "dream" is more appropriate) for this book nearly two years ago, to its final production now.
I, like all other gluten-free / celiac persons, want to live life to the fullest and not feel encumbered by the dietary conditions of a lifelong disease. The best way to overcome the initial "trauma" of finding out that you can no longer eat all those favorite desserts of old is to find a safe replacement that is just as good (if not better). So, I hope our new Gluten-Free Gourmet Desserts book will allow others to quickly make the transition to an enjoyable and fulfilling gluten-free life, and gluten free baking experience.
